Sharon is Associate Professor in English at MSU-M. She hold a Ph.D. in literature for children and young adults. At MSU-M she teaches literature, writing, and manages the secondary English Education program.

Moving Beyond the Notion of Universal Voice

“Where were the white books?” Sam’s question is a serious question that suggests he does not view those writers whose cultural identities are hyphenated as truly American. American books for Sam would be written primarily by white authors and would espouse the canonical view that the American literary tradition is Western and monocultural.
